The Application Process

Arts Practicum I

Applying for Arts Practicum I involves a number of steps:

  • Read the outcomes statement for the unit
  • Work through the information and questions provided on the Exploring Directions page
  • Scan the list of previous host organisations, take a look at the gallery of past projects, the noticeboard of practicum opportunities, and research other possible organisations where you could undertake the practicum
  • Complete the online expression of interest form
  • Officially enrol in the Arts Practicum for the relevant semester (Please note: Your enrolment will be listed as 'invalid' until you have met with the Arts Practicum Coordinator)

Once you have completed these steps, the Arts Practicum Coordinator will contact you to schedule a meeting to discuss potential placements.

Arts Practicum II

The Arts Practicum II is designed to connect the practical experiences of the workplace with the theoretical and critical engagements foregrounded in the university environment. In order to do so, you will undertake a placement where the project and the organisation relate strongly to an academic discipline area. You will be supervised throughout the practicum by a supervisor from your host organisation and by a member of the UWA academic staff. Your project and report will be expected to engage analytically with critical issues in the relevant discipline area.

While the Arts Practicum II offers a unique opportunity to directly link academic content and workplace experience, it is often difficult to find suitable placements. You should contact the Arts Practicum Co-ordinator well in advance of the semester in which you have enrolled for the Arts Practicum II.

Applying for the Arts Practicum II involves the following steps:

Once you have completed these steps, the Arts Practicum Coordinator will contact you to schedule a meeting to discuss potential placements.

* As part of completing the expression of interest form, you will need to find a staff member in the relevant discipline who is willing to act as your supervisor. Your supervisor will be involved in developing ideas for your practicum project and finding an appropriate placement, as well as meeting you and remaining in touch throughout the practicum, helping you identify a focus for your report and marking the report and presentation. This may be a substantial commitment, so make sure that your supervisor is aware of what they are getting in to, and that they will have enough time to fit the practicum in! You can direct potential discipline supervisors to more information here. If you are having difficulty finding a supervisor, get in touch with the Arts Practicum Coordinator and you will be given support and assistance.
